Maybe You Can Reapply
It’s July 1986 and I’m sitting in the den, with the tv in the background, holding for the operator to get me a phone number. No google, websites or Facebook to find numbers: How did we ever survive?Me: Hello Admissions. My name is Kimberlyn Harris (check the blog for background on that). I haven’t gotten my admissions information to start school next month. Can you help me?[Lots of qualifying questions to pull up information]Admissions: Miss Harris, did you receive the letter we sent you?Me: No. I moved after graduation and I’m renting a room until it’s time to leave for school.[Silence] Admissions: Miss Harris, We thank you for applying, but I’m sorry, you were not accepted at this time.[light goes out][More Silence] and a physical pain that I know now is related to unbearable disappointment.Admissions: [Recognizing my silent struggle] Miss Harris. Did you have any other questions?Me: I don’t have anywhere to go, my room is temporary and I thought I was going to school.Admissions Counselor: Miss Harris, you can always reapply. #trylocal. The combination of your GPA and SAT scores factors greatly into our decision. Perhaps you could start out at your local community college. I see that you’re in Charlotte, and CPCC is an excellent place to start. If you start there, get your grades up, perhaps you could transfer after 2 years and come in as a Junior.[reignition]Me: Ok. Thank you.Sept, 1986 I found a roommate and moved into my first apt. I started CPCC in January of 1987. I supported myself with two jobs at times, taking as many classes as I could. I transferred to Fayetteville State and graduated as the President of the Accounting Society, Delta Mu Delta Honors and Cum Laude with a 3.5 gpa.Thank you to the UNCG Admissions counselor.
